ILO report examines how generative AI affects job tasks in Vietnam

The report emphasizes changing tasks, skills development and responsible business AI adoption.

An ILO brief issued on 16 April estimates that generative AI could affect some tasks in occupations employing about 11.5 million Vietnamese workers, roughly one fifth of the workforce.

Task restructuring is more likely than complete job disappearance. Workers in occupations at high risk of full automation represent less than 2% of Viet Nam’s workforce; clerical, finance, insurance, wholesale, retail and information-communication work is particularly exposed.

Exposure differs by gender: women’s concentration in clerical, administrative and service roles raises potential impact. Skills and job redesign should reflect different groups’ conditions.

The brief recommends workplace dialogue, skills development and responsible AI governance alongside adoption. SME support should connect efficiency with job quality and involve employees in discussing new technology and workflow changes.
